Les auteurs

Arbia Hilali est docteur en Histoire ancienne et maître assistante à l’université de Sfax. Dans cet ouvrage, elle est l’auteur des parties suivantes : “La Méditerranée hellénistique avant 264”, “La première guerre punique”, “L’image du héros des guerres puniques : Hannibal et la traversée des Alpes” et “Les institutions romaines”. Elle a également contribué à la partie sur la Carthage romaine, au glossaire, à la liste des personnages et à la chronologie.

Khaled Melliti, docteur en Histoire ancienne et chercheur associé à Orient et Méditerranée, a publié Carthage. Histoire d’une métropole méditerranéenne (Perrin, 2016). Dans le présent ouvrage, il est l’auteur de “L’entre deux guerres”, “La deuxième guerre punique”, “Le commerce carthaginois”, “Le panthéon de Carthage” et “Les institutions de Carthage”. Il a en outre rédigé les listes des personnages, des lieux et des peuples, ainsi que les éléments carthaginois du glossaire et de la chronologie.

Ouiza Ait Amara est professeure d’Histoire du Maghreb antique à l’université d’Alger, spécialiste de la période préromaine en Afrique du Nord et docteur en Histoire militaire. Elle a publié, entre autres, Numides et Maures au combat. États et armées en Afrique du Nord antique jusqu’à l’époque de Juba Ier, coll. “Studi di Storia Antica e di Archeologia” (2013, Ortacesus). Dans le présent ouvrage, elle est l’auteure de la partie sur la troisième guerre punique.

Giovanni Brizzi est professeur d’Histoire romaine à l’université de Bologne et spécialiste d’Hannibal. Il a contribué à cet ouvrage en rédigeant les fiches consacrées à Scipion l’Africain et Hannibal.

Mathilde Cazeaux est agrégée de Lettres classiques et préparatrice à l’ENS de Lyon. Elle a rédigé l’introduction et la partie historiographie de cet ouvrage, et elle a traduit en français les fiches personnages écrites pour cette publication en italien par Giovanni Brizzi.

Agnès Groslambert, maître de conférences habilitée en Histoire romaine à l’université Lyon 3 Jean-Moulin, a déjà publié chez Atlande Le monde romain (2014) et Religion et pouvoir (2019). Pour le présent ouvrage, elle a rédigé la partie “La renaissance de Carthage, des Gracques à Auguste” et elle a contribué au glossaire ainsi qu’à la liste des personnages.

HANNIBAL, L’IMAGE D’UN LIBÉRATEUR EN AFRIQUE DU NORD CONTEMPORAINE

En Afrique du Nord, les historiens à l’époque coloniale et précoloniale n’ont prêté que peu d’attention à la période préislamique. Ceci est dû à la conquête ottomane qui a renforcé l’appartenance à une communauté musulmane [BEN TAHER, 2012]. En Algérie coloniale, l’image d’Hannibal n’a pas toujours forcé l’admiration des leaders nationalistes algériens. L’un de ceux-ci, Hocine Aït Ahmed (1926-2015), a écrit : “La traversée des Alpes par Bonaparte (ou, ajouterons-nous par Hannibal et ses guerriers) peut être soit une merveille de résolution, soit un coup de tête de véritable extravagance.” Aït Ahmed nous invite à réfléchir sur les exploits militaires exceptionnels comme ceux d’Hannibal et non pas à les suivre d’une manière aveugle [BEN TAHER, 2012]. En Tunisie, l’historien Hassan Hosni Abdelwahab (1884-1968) met en valeur l’image héroïque d’Hannibal. Il reprend la description du stratège carthaginois par Tite-Live : il était vaillant, patient, proche de ses soldats, le premier à s’engager et le dernier à quitter les lieux [Tite-Live, Histoire romaine, XXI, 4]. Habib Boularès évoque la marche légendaire d’Hannibal [BOULARÈS, 2000]. L’image d’Hannibal s’inscrit dans un programme de culte de la personnalité voué au père de la patrie et héros de la nation Bourguiba. Ce dernier place Hannibal dans l’histoire de la Tunisie à côté de Jugurtha, saint Augustin et Ibn Khaldoun. Il considère qu’Hannibal est parvenu à franchir les Alpes grâce à son génie. Cette référence historique permet à Bourguiba de s’attribuer une gloire que ses prédécesseurs n’ont pas atteinte. Le souvenir d’Hannibal refait surface dans la Tunisie contemporaine, dans une perspective identitaire nationale. Hannibal est aussi intégré dans le paysage religieux musulman comme le montre le nom d’un lieu sacré dédié à un marabout nommé ‘Sidi Anbil’ à Zama [SRARFI ABID, 2007].
